Wanted Me to Cook Him Dinner on Our First Date
by Ella
The evening of our date arrived and I got dressed up in a nice shirt and a pair of black pants with heels. He had asked me over the phone what kind of food I liked. I said that one of my favorites was steak, so I thought we might go to a local restaurant that served really good steak. He arrived on time and I opened the door to my apartment. He greeted me pleasantly, but while waiting for me to get my purse, commented in a negative way about some magazines I had placed on my coffee table. I have always liked music and at the time was a regular reader of "Rolling Stone". He made the comment that we would probably not get along, because he hated all music except for country music. It bothered me a little that he seemed very serious when making these statements. I tried to laugh it off, but it put an immediate strain on our conversation. When we were in his truck on our way to our date, he asked me where I went to high school. When I told him, he immediately started cutting it down, as his alma mater was our biggest rival. I thought to myself that for a lawyer, he wasn't a very brilliant or charming conversationalist, but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt until I knew him better. As I mentioned before, I thought we might go out to a nice restaurant for a great steak dinner. Unfortunately, that was not the case. He told me that he wanted to surprise me with our dinner arrangements and drove us to the next town where he lived. Instead of a restaurant, he had planned for us to eat at his house. I was not very comfortable with this, as I didn't know him and felt like he should have made it clear to me what his plans were in advance. We went inside his house, which was not as nice as my apartment, and he proceeded to tell me that he hoped I knew how to cook. He had the ridiculous idea that I was going to cook for him while he grilled a couple of steaks for us outside. At that point, I politely asked to be taken home. He tried to talk me out of it, but I insisted, saying that if he wouldn't drive me, then I would call a friend to come pick me up. He was chivalrous enough to drive me home, but we didn't exchange a word between us on the way back to my apartment, and he never apologized for assuming that I would be okay with going to his house and cooking his dinner on a first date. I never saw him again. I did hear that he got married a few years later. Good luck to his wife, is all I can say!
