To Love is to Bury - The Cowboy Junkies

My favourite love song is "To Love is to Bury" by the Cowboy Junkies.

It's a love song which really isn't a love song, but I'll get to that later.

First off, there's Margo Timmins' voice, which I think is as important to mood of the song as anything else. She has a smokey sensual voice which at times barely rises above a whisper, if there were a voice which was meant to sing love songs, this is the one.

She could sing "Happy Birthday" and make it sound sensual.

When listening to the words it of the song it gives a sense of a shared bond which was lost in death, it seems to tell the story of a marriage gone wrong ending in separation and tragic death.

It's sad yet celebrates the life that the couple had before everything went wrong, it starts with closure and burying the body then goes back and explores their lives together.

It's a very touching song especially the way Margo sings it. But here's the fun part; as Margo Timmins explained at a concert a few years ago, it's not really a love song even though everyone thinks it is, it's actually a song about a murder-suicide.
