The Very Thought of You - Nat King Cole

Classic Love Songs | Top Love Songs

The Very Thought of You by Nat King Cole came out in 1958 and is a classic love song that's immediately associated with him.

Cole's distinctive, smooth baritone voice made every song he performed a thing of beauty. What many people don't know is that he started out as a jazz pianist, not a singer. Some of his many hits included "Unforgettable", "Mona Lisa", and "When I Fall in Love."

Cole was the first black performer to have his own television show in the United States, hosting the Nat King Cole Show in 1956. The show was ultimately pulled because it had problems attracting paying sponsors.

Cole was a lifelong advocate for civil rights, and would not sing in segregated venues. He was among the artists invited to sing at President Kennedy's Inaugural Gala in 1961.

Nat King Cole died of lung cancer in 1965.
