People Forget the Positives to Dating after 40

by Carl
(Rockford, Illinois)

As a man, dating after turning forty wasn't nearly as tumultuous as my married friends suggested. Most warned me that I would run into two types of women: the single ones who were desperately looking for a husband and the divorced ones who were bitter about virtually anything in the world.

What I found was actually far different.

Sure, there were always a few that fit the stereotypes of man-eater and man-killer, but mostly I just found people who were like me: career-oriented women who never settled down and never really felt like they needed to until they felt they had accomplished something in their work life.

What people rarely discuss about dating after forty are all the positives. In my twenties, I was always broke so dinner was usually a slice of pizza and maybe a pitcher of beer. In my thirties, it always felt like there was pressure to hit the fanciest restaurant in town and splurge on my (usually) younger date.

Women in their forties, though, don't need to be impressed. Sure it's just as important to be considerate and polite, but having a dinner in a comfy, little bistro seemed to be just fine with both of us. That is a great thing.
