Not the Usual Cliche

by Rona
(Brighton, UK)

I became single when I was 43 - my husband of 15 years left me for a younger woman (the usual cliche, I guess).

It took me about a year to 'get over it,' to stop crying and to think about meeting somebody special. In that year I had naturally lost a lot of weight as I turned away from food and forced my sorry self to the gym to punish myself for his behaviour. It was while I was at the gym that I met a an old school girlfriend who was also a recent divorcee.

We decided to date together, going to sophisticated bars and restaurants and organised dinner dances to 'meet the right sort of guy'. I did think it would be hard to find anyone at my age but I think I benefited from a stressful year of losing weight and being ditched by my ex-husband certainly made me start to take more pride in my appearance.

Although I have had to make more effort than when I was in my 20s to look good, I feel more confident in my 40s than I ever did in my 20s. At 43 I know I am looking for a companion and someone to talk with more than just the physical side of things that I yearned for in my 20s. For the first time in my life I feel free to have fun and enjoy time with a mature guy that is not motivated by sex! And yet, with my new gym body I feel sexier than ever!
