Mary Wells My Guy lead the charge of black artists attempting to break the colour bar in American radio in the 1960s. The catchy, upbeat music and lyrics of My Guy certainly helped with that break through. It was number one in the R& B charts for 1964.

Wells was known variously as the "Queen of Motown" and the First Lady of Motown". She struggled with ill-health for most of her life, and died of cancer at age 49.
