Lack of work ethics

by Margaret
(Franklin Park, NJ, USA)

I am a 59 year old woman who has worked in an office environment since I was about 17.

When I embarked on my work career there were rules about how to do business. Honesty, integrity, respectfulness and competence were mandatory. We always dressed in a businesslike manner and conducted ourselves as professionals.

It really bugs me that in business today anything goes. People chew gum on the telephone that is, if you get a real person. When looking for information, the person on the other end of the line can say whatever they please. They don't even have to give correct information because you'll never get them on the phone again anyway.

People are rude and uncaring. No one even thinks to go the extra mile. And the dress that's allowed in offices today. It used to be that we had to be fully dressed but that doesn't seem to apply today. Skin can show all over the place, showing cleavage seems to be popular and so does words written across a persons bottom.

If I call a company to get some information, I can get a different answer from everyone I speak with. Now if I want information, I call the company and speak to as many people as I can in order to hit upon 2 answers that are the same. That's the one I chose to believe, although it is not necessarily correct.

The human touch is gone, and caring about ones job is also gone. No one has a conscience about their job.

When I do business with someone, I'd like to speak to someone who speaks English without such a heavy accent that they can't be understood, I'd like someone who cares about what they say, and is proud of their performance on the job, someone who is well groomed without a multitude of piercings and tattoos, both of which draw my attention away from the person themselves
