Find Someone With Similar Interests
by Phan
I am not a very outgoing person, so bar scenes and the like don't work for me. So I posted a profile and off I went. One day, I got an email message from a woman named Stacy that essentially said, "Wanna chat?" She related that she was a teacher, and from the same area as me geographically. We exchanged emails several times, and realized that we lived within 10 minutes of each other and never met. Through emails we realized that we had a lot in common. We decided to talk on the phone, and the first time I called her, she asked me "How did you get this number?" I responded, "You gave it to me." Four hours later we were off and running. We figured out that we had many of the same friends and had led very similar lives. After several long phone conversations, we decided to meet in person for the first time. We knew we had something based on our conversations, but we still had to get over the hump of meeting in person. That happened in May 2001, we realized similar interests, especially in sports. We grew close, and we did so quickly. We were apart during 9/11/01, and that fact made us grow even closer even more quickly. We realized how important human connection is, and how fragile life is. 10 days later, on Sept 21st, I asked her to marry me, 2 years later we were married, and 7 years later we are still going strong. We have had our ups and downs, through the difficulty of job searches and family building, but our connection has remained deep, and I believe that a major factor is that we met online. Our connection was initiated on real emotions and similarities as opposed to physical connection, and that is deeper than anything, and our connection was forced to be that because it was made online.
