I'm 51, and have been in retail a long time.

I do my best to greet everyone in a pleasant manner, smile, and get a pleasant conversation going. It irks me that I ask people how they are, and they say, "So far, so good."

Are they anticipating something hideous will happen soon?

Whatever happened to, "Fine, thank you," or even, "My feet are killing me." I would rather hear something concrete and specifically bad rather than a generalized reminder that we could die in a horrible accident any second now.

So cut it out! And you know who you are...
