Donna Fargo - The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA
by Ronnie
Even though I am a guy, it is such a happy, feel-good song that I find myself singing along with it at the top of my voice every time I hear it - assuming I'm not in public. Most love songs tend to be slow beautiful ballads that may even bring a tear to your eye. I certainly have several of those songs that I love. But "Happiest Girl" is a song about being in love and wanting the whole world to know about it in an upbeat, even slightly goofy, kind of way. I once heard the famous country media personality Ralph Emery comment after playing the song how different it was for a country song to begin with. He kiddingly said that in country music love was supposed to hurt. But hurt it doesn't, according to the writer. Instead love takes the most simple non-events of the day and turns them into something to be experienced because love is wrapped around them. For instance, the song speaks of how just waking up next to the one you love is something rapturous to be experienced. Making each other's lunch is an exercise in love. The line of "You make the coffee, I'll make the bed" takes a menial task and makes it seem like fun because the two people are sharing some time together before leaving for the day. The song is also special to me because it takes me back to a simpler time when being in love made everything so much better. School wasn't as hard, the summers weren't as hot, and the aches and pains of growing into adulthood seemed to disappear. I was certainly the happiest guy in the "whole USA," and didn't mind changing that one word in the song in order to sing along with Donna Fargo, and I still don't mind.
