Book Club Baddie

by Anonymous

I had been married since I was 18 years old. My husband passed away after 42 years of marriage. I never thought I would be interested in dating again. Finally after two years, some girlfriends convinced me that dating would be great.

I attend a book club twice a month and a gentleman began coming to the group with a woman I assumed was his wife. One evening after book club was done the man approached me and asked about some comments I made on the book "eat, pray, love".

We chatted and I asked if his wife agreed with my perspective. He corrected me saying the woman was his sister and that she had encouraged him to join the group. I smiled and inside my heart jumped. Figuring I was on a roll , I asked him to join me for coffee at the Starbucks. We walked down the street chatting. I learned his wife had died and he was a retired math teacher. i joked that my math skills were terrible. It seemed too good to be true.

Coffee went well and we planned dinner for two days later. I spent the next two days like a silly high school girl planning what to wear , chatting and giggling with my girlfriends. My stomach fluttered when the doorbell rang Saturday evening. I invited the gentleman inside to have a seat while I finished my makeup and poured a glass of wine for us. I quickly finished my makeup and we were off to dinner.

We decided to eat at the local Buca di Beppo a restaurant I love. We sat at the table and the evening quickly went downhill. The waiter neglected to bring water (the restaurant was full). My companion flipped out. He told the young man he should "step up the service if he wanted a damn tip".

My eyes got huge! I was embarrassed. We ordered an appetizer ( calamari), he didn't like it. "Well, we can eat it and they will take it off the bill if we say it was bad". I promptly stood up, asked for the check and left.

Needless to say he never attended book club again, but his sister did to tell me that I had broken his heart. I told her he had broken the rules of class and etiquette.

Losers are out there at all ages!
