BlackPeopleMeet is one of the web's most popular black dating sites, with over 500,000 members (primarly in the US and Canada), and 1000 new members joining every day.

Black People Meet seems to be predominantly aimed at Americans, but we did find Canadian and UK profiles.

The site (a member of the PeopleMedia group of companies) has been online since 2002, and is a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

BlackPeopleMeet caters to heterosexual, lesbian and gay singles.

There were thousands of profiles returned in the search we did (men and women aged between 50-51), so the over-50 demographic is well-represented.

We usually do a very narrow search as this is a good indicator that there are lots of profiles to choose from: if there are lots for 50-51, then there'll be loads generally.

We like:

Black People Meet is an easy-to-use (aside from the initial sign-up, see below), black romance site that welcomes singles of all ethnicities, but is geared toward black singles.

You can block specific people from seeing your profile and getting in touch with you. And you can pre-select what age range/gender you want to be able to view your profile.

Their Help files are comprehensive and it's easy to find pricing information. The onsite magazine is interesting, and full of entertaining articles and advice.

There’s a link to their dating safety tips in their welcome email after you sign up, as well as hints on how best to upload your photo (and how to get it to them if you don’t have access to a digital camera).

We don’t like:

We did find a few user reviews online complaining that a certain percentage of the members (male and female) were only after one night stands and not seeking long-term relationships, or were scammers.

But you'll find that on most dating sites. It's one of the downsides of online dating. Use your common sense and make it clear what you're looking for in your profile. Like all dating sites, you should keep your wits about you and be aware of the dangers of online dating, as well as the fun side!

On login/sign-up to BlackPeopleMeet you're forced to enter a zipcode, which would seem to indicate that the site is only for US residents. We thought about making up a zipcode, but in the end used 90210 (yes, we watched too much TV in the 90s) because it’s the only US postcode we know!

We logged in, and then amended our country/post code details from our Account page. But this seems an unnecessarily backward way of going about things.

Why not just offer a drop-down list of countries to choose from on the sign-up page?
