Best and Worst Date All in 24 Hours
by Beth
That is, until he changed the conversation. After the small talk was over (and I actually admire men who are capable of small talk) the weirdness began. He asked me about my job. Not what I did, but how much I made. Really? Hmm…I’d rather not say, I told him. He looked shocked. He asked about my grown children. Not their names or where they lived, but if I still supported them. I should have left right then and there, but I actually began to find it amusing. I spent the rest of the date batting away personal questions about finances and retirement savings. But the truth is, at the end of the date I was exhausted. It was no longer funny. I knew when I got home I’d get a phone call from my daughter, asking me how it went. I didn’t look forward to telling her about another failed date. The next day I woke up refreshed and ready for a three-day getaway I had planned months ago. I was standing in the airport when he showed up. Not the failure from the previous night, but an old flame who just happened to be passing through. What were the chances? It seemed more than coincidence. We wound up laughing and talking and having a wonderful time in that busy airport. He lives 2000 miles away, so I know we won’t be dating again anytime soon…but I had such a good time that I forgot that I had had the worst date in quite awhile less than 24 hours previously.
